History
In the year 25,354 AA, the Maldune Star System fell into the grasp of the Feyan Star Dominion, among the first within the Drucos Nebula to do so. From this early conquest arose the Starhold of Arxastralis, a massive fortification erected by the Feyans that would serve as both bastion and symbol of their supremacy.
Over time, Maldune’s stature swelled. It became a bustling port and central node in the Catuvella Star Sector. The Glessum Furse would settle the system in 27,117 AA, adding another layer to its layered legacy.
But Maldune was never a place to rest quietly beneath the banners of one lord or another. In 30,178 AA, the Skane came. Raiders, conquerors, and settlers, they seized the system. King Wulfrun the Elder Umbra Wyvernborn reclaimed it in 30,234 AA, only for it to fall once again to the Skanes of the Brigh Star Sector in 30,280 AA. By 30,284 AA, King Edwyn the Magnificent had once again restored the system to Dralan hands. Such was Maldune’s nature, a realm ever in motion, ever in conflict.
In the year 30,184 AA, two Skane fleets emerged into the Gaint Star Sector. The first, led by the fearsome Warlord Bloodhair, comprised 13,125 Star-Fleets. The second, smaller but no less dangerous, fell under Warlord Attor Lowca Witchborn and numbered 4,200 Star-Fleets. Bloodhair seized the Haesta Star System and established forward bases, launching raids deep into Gewiss space. Attor Lowca turned his gaze to Maldune, and there he rooted his fleets.
But the Dralan Star Kingdoms would not go quietly. High King Osgar the Great, seasoned by hardship and bolstered by strategic foresight gained at the court of the Star Kingdom of Frakka, had prepared his realm. Garrisons had been planted, fleets made mobile, and his banner-lords, though grumbling at the cost, now saw the wisdom in his preparations.
In a thunderous clash at Regnen, Osgar, his heir Crown Prince Wulfrun the Elder, and their forces crushed Bloodhair’s massive fleet. Yet the war was far from over. Warlord Attor Lowca Witchborn was driven from Combrogi space by Sector-lord Wulfrun, the Lord of Angul and withdrew to Maldune.
The following year, 30,186 AA, was a time of weddings and war. Crown Prince Wulfrun the Elder took Ingweald to spouse, even as she and Sector-lord Wulfrun of Angul rallied forces to counter Skane aggression. Osgar, his daughter-in-law, and daughter gathered their fleets in the Brigae Star System, their eyes upon Skane-occupied Haesta and Maldune.
Negotiations were attempted. Warlord Attor Lowca Witchborn parleyed while Bloodhair sought to escape encirclement. The ensuing pursuit ended in a resounding Gewiss victory, with Skane survivors retreating to the ancient Ark of Dermerk in Grauth. Besieged and broken, they gave hostages and were permitted flight into the Iken Star Sector, vowing never to return.
Yet betrayal soon followed. The Skanes reneged on their oaths, many sought to join Warlord Attor, at Beamfleote, a moon of Maldune. Before they could join with Warlord Attor, he had led his fleets out of Maldune to raid, leaving only a small garrison behind, and that was when Crown Prince Wulfrun the Elder and Sector-lord Wulfrun struck. It was a rout. The wife and children of Attor Lowca Witchborn were captured.
Attor fled in 30,187 AA as Osgar withdrew, and began raiding along the Gewiss border, finally crossing into the Vellaun Star Sector.
In 30,234 AA, Wulfrun the Elder, now a king in her own right, once again captured Maldune. She made it a base of operations during her campaigns to unite the Star Kingdoms of Catuvella and Iken, laying the foundations for her father’s dream of a united realm.
A year later, the system came under siege. At the Battle of Maldune, Wulfrun the Elder shattered the Skane fleet. Her reputation soared. Surrounding systems bent the knee.
Even after her death in 30,248 AA, Maldune’s warriors repelled Skane raids, holding firm. The Skane returned again in 30,280 AA and took the system. In 30,284 AA, King Edwyn the Magnificent reclaimed it alongside the other Eight Skane Star Systems.
By 30,316 AA, the Royal Mint and Hoard was established on Maldune itself. Prosperity bloomed. The Star System ascended to heights greater than ever before.
But peace is always brief.
In 30,383 AA, Frea the Adventurer arrived in the Gaint Star Sector with 7,500 Star-Fleets. Maldune was her target. She met resistance from Sector-lord Ceolbert the Brave and the system’s local forces. She demanded payment to depart. Ceolbert’s answer was the stuff of legends: “We will pay you with warheads and blades. With sweat, blood, and tears.”
The Battle of Maldune followed. Though vastly outnumbered, 4,500 to 5,250 Star-Fleets against Frea’s 7,500, Ceolbert stood firm. He fell in battle. His personal guard fought on, buying time for their allies to flee. Their deaths became an anthem of heroism. Songs, holo-dramas, even epics were written of their stand.
In the aftermath, King Oswald the Ill-Advised paid Frea a staggering ransom of 2.4 quadrillion credits, along with rare metals and resources, to spare further slaughter.
Maldune, ever bloodied, ever proud, was once the crown of the Kingdom of Grim, ruled by Clan Rethe Grim. Though the clan bent the knee and lost their crown, they remained stewards of the system until eclipsed by Clan Umbra Nether, descendants of Oughtred the Old, who once ruled Iken after the Great Savage Crusade.
Though power shifted, Maldune remained home to countless descendants of Rethe Grim, a memory carved into the bones of the world.
And it remains, still, a place of significance. For it was here that Sector-lord Ceolbert the Brave faced death not with despair, but with unyielding defiance. A lesson, perhaps, in what it means to truly belong to Drala.
