History
Kynancear, Crown of the Cadoc Kings
As set down by Witch Lord Bertwin Gisking Bearspear, for Beorn.
The Kynancear Star System is among the nine great pillars of the Dungar Sector, a world of proud lords and a people blooded by endless raids. Skanes, Tewteh marauders, Dralan Star Guards, and the ever-proud Feyan-Galan of Combrogi have all struck here, and yet the system endures, scarred but unbroken.
It was first taken into the dominion of the Feyans when General Thais Duccius Jewelclad, later Emperor Thais the Rebuilder, swept the Drala Cluster in 25,355 AA, binding Belgar, Scir, Durn, Iniswitrin, Isca, Kynancear, and other systems beneath the banners of the Feyan Star Dominion. The Galan way endured beneath the new masters, as it so often did, in halls and hearths though not in crowns.
In the years that followed, the Faith of the Feyans reached deep into the sector. In 27,602 AA, they raised temples upon Duntagell, founding the Pontiff of Kynancear. The date is noted with some doubt, whether the Faith’s claim was then or later, the temples stood, and from them the winged statues watched over kings and commons alike.
The wars of Dungar are woven into Kynancear’s tale. In 27,643 AA, at Botmen in the Mawgansan System, the lords of Gewiss and Isca, King xxxxx Medgar Dreadborn of Isca and King Merrick the Lawgiver, were struck down in defeat by the combined might of King xxxxx Cadoc Boghowl of Mawgansan, King xxxxx Cadoc Bogborn of Kynancear, and their allies. This was the third Feyan-Galan victory in four years, a triumph that let the Dungar realms stand independent for near three thousand years more, until 30,028 AA.
By the dawn of the 30th millennium, the Cadoc kings once more bore the crown. In 30,150 AA, Balor Cadoc Bogborn of Kynancear was crowned. Three years later, he met with Osgar the Great of Gewiss, who sought to secure his Dungar borders before binding the sector beneath his own overlordship. Balor’s crown soon passed to Uarraig Cadoc Bogborn, who inherited the charge.
And Uarraig, brave to the point of doom, advanced to Itcis. In 30,156 AA, he led the Kynancear fleets to join King xxxxx Eown Caerborn of Carnbrathan, King xxxxx Cadoc Boghowl of Mawgansan, and many others with 808 Star-Bands and thirteen Dungar Outcast Knights, with the levies of System-lord Viggo of Isca, Sigebehrt of Nansarnek, and Ermingard the Loyal. They stood together, 1,221 fleets, against King Ragnar the Raven Blade, who bore with him Alfhildr of Scir, Alkmund of Morigena, and 1,800 Skane fleets besides.
The Battle of Itcis is well told. Ragnar fell, slain in his flagship battle by Viggo of Isca. 1,200 of his star-fleets were destroyed, and with them Alkmund of Morigena. But the price was dear. King Uarraig of Kynancear fell upon that star field as well, and the crown passed to his heir, Morwyn the Beautiful. Thus the house of Cadoc Bogborn was blooded in both triumph and grief.
The years that followed were no gentler. In 30,362 AA, the system was raided by a Skane warlord, his name lost to me at the moment. Fires burned across the star marches, but the halls endured.
By 30,394 AA, the Dungar Sector itself boiled in rebellion. Beornwulf Medgar Dreadborn, Sector-lord of Dungar, was set upon by his own, and the Cadoc line of Kynancear stood in the forefront. King Arthfael of Kynancear and his kin Ardghal took up arms, joined by the Skane warlords Sigfast Ulric Geat Moonborn, Edith the Raventail, and many lords besides. They raided into Mawgansan, into Isca, and sacked Nansarnek, where the Great Feyan Temple was put to the torch. They bore their banners into Bodunn, Morigena, Scir, Iniswitrin, Durn, Haesta, and Regnen, laying waste to holdstead and hall alike.
It was in these years that Arthfael’s name was bound tightly to the rebellion, and Kynancear’s ships struck deeper into the Star Commonwealth space than ever before. More Skanes joined, the dread King Harwyn Forkbeard of Skold, Sector-lord Ecgwynn the Fast of Skatha, the siblings Lord Egil the Iron Rune and Lord Meredith Umbra Runeborn of Cyth, and many others. In 30,398 AA, their fleet defeated Oswald the Ill-Advised and the Dralan King’s Knight Cwen Faethm Cloudborn at the Battle of Brigae, though at cost, Prince Lathgertha of Skold was slain in the fighting. The reavers and rebels departed with thralls, loot, and a staggering ransom, 4,800,000,000,000,000 quintillion credits, if the ledgers are to be believed. In the treaty’s wake, Sigfast Ulric was raised as Highlord of Escan, System-lord of Isca, and Sector-lord of Dungar, while Arthfael, Ardghal and many other Dungar rebels swore him fealty.
Even so, Kynancear’s lords pressed on. In 30,403 AA, Arthfael and Ardghal, with their Feyan-Galan banners, joined Sigfast Ulric in the defense of Isca against Warlord Kunibert Sturm Platinumborn and his Skane reavers. The foe was driven off, but Arthfael, headstrong, disobeyed orders and gave chase. His fleets were struck and defeated before relief could arrive. Only the timely coming of Sigfast and his allies saved him from ruin. Humbled, Arthfael bent the knee before his men and swore loyalty to Sigfast, binding tribe Cadoc to tribe Geat by oath. In secret, Sigfast acknowledged Arthfael as rightful King of the Feyan-Galan of Dungar, with the promise that his line would one day be restored to the high seat.
Thus Kynancear remains, home of the Cadoc kings, a house whose blood runs back through the crowns of Dungar, through the Feyan years, and into the Galan age itself. The Star Commonwealth claims dominion here, but its grip is weak, so long as the taxes are rendered. The Cadoc line still holds court, and the halls whisper of prophecy:
That from Kynancear a hero will rise, born of this last line of kings, and reclaim the Drucos Nebula for the Galan people.
And Beorn, though I am old and hardened by centuries, I would not scoff at such a tale. For the stones of Kynancear are deep with blood, and such stones remember.
