History

Of Iken, the Fallen Gate

From the meditations of Witch Lord Bertwin Gisking Bearspear, Keeper of the Old Fires

The Star Kingdom of Iken, now but a shadow within the Star Commonwealth of Drala, was once one of the ancient crowns of the Dralan Furse, born of steel, sorrow, and exile. It stood at the threshold between the Drucos Nebula and the haunted, flickering dark of Morimarusa, where the veil is thin.

Forged in the aftermath of the Glessum Scattering and Great Flight, Iken was settled by those Furse who had fled from the ruin of the Glessum Star Cluster, that once-glorious cradle of their kind, now shattered by the foul incursion of the Wergh. It was through the Great Star-Gate of the Skane Nebula, a passage of unfathomable age and design, that the Wergh first came, false gods of horror masquerading as flame and silence. Those who survived became refugees, and some among them chose Iken as their haven.

In time, the lords of Iken bowed to House Umbra Loreborn, a line of ancient scholars and mystics touched by prophecy and the Cosmic Essence. They ruled with wisdom, if not with might. By the time the Great Savage Crusade burned across the void of Drala, Iken was the least of the Four Kingdoms, vulnerable in strength, but noble in memory.

It was to Iken that the Children of Rothgar first came upon entering Drala. There, King Wigheard the Martyr offered them peace, provisions, and passage. Some say he foresaw the fire they carried and hoped to turn it away with kindness. Others claim he feared them and sought only to delay doom. Whatever his intent, the Skanes of the Crusade feasted in his halls before they turned their blades upon Umber.

And when they had conquered Umber, they returned.

Wigheard, betrayed by fate or folly, took up arms against them. His forces fell, and he was captured. They say he was executed within his own greathold, bound to his throne and beheaded with the very sword of his ancestors, a cruel echo of the old Furse tradition that once honored the heads of kings as relics.

Thus fell Iken, second of the Four, and a host of its worlds passed into the hands of Skane warlords. Their descendants remain still, their banners now sworn to the Star Commonwealth, yet their hearts bound to older oaths and bloodier songs.

It was King Osgar the Great who negotiated the Peace of Osgar & Oughtred, dividing the spoils of Drala with the invaders. He gave Iken to King Oughtred the Old and the remnants of the Great Savage Crusade, granting them rule over the star kingdom in return for peace.

Yet peace, like fire, does not linger unless fed.

It fell to Queen Wulfrun the Elder, daughter of Osgar, to bring Iken to heel. Through war, treaty, and the slow grind of steel, she subdued the star kingdom, folding it into the Star Kingdom of Gewiss. And it was under her son, Osmund the Glorious, that the Star Commonwealth itself would rise, a dream made flesh upon the ruins of a hundred broken crowns.

Even now, Iken bears the weight of its divided legacy. It remains home to countless Furse who cling to the Old Ways, a faith only deepened by the arrival of Skane blood. Its star systems are plagued by raids and piracy, the Morimarusa spawning fresh reavers like wasps from a shattered hive. Though Iken boasts a population equal to the mighty Vellaun Star Sector, some fifty-two billion souls, it is divided among but four major systems.

The Ikena Star System, seat of ancient power and pain, the Tweon Star System, long known for its marsh-bound holds and shipwrights. The Dommoc Star System, home to the redoubt of Beagclachan and the embattled House Umbra Loreborn, and the Sutha Star System.

In the early years of the Star Commonwealth, it was House Rethe Grimborn who rose to prominence in Iken. Edwyn Half-King was among the most enduring figures of the age, serving five kings of the Star Commonwealth and acting as foster-father to King Humbert the Peaceable. Though never crowned, he ruled in all but name, and his legacy lingers like shadow on stone.

And what of House Umbra Loreborn, once kings of Iken? Though their crown is lost, they endure. From Beagclachan, Gaotheirghe, Sanghold, Brennos, Isernesdenu, Waels, Rubraporta, Fraxineta, Icknield, and dozens of minor star systems they maintain the titles of Highlords. Scattered throughout the sector are many of their blood, some noble, more lowborn, some hiding their name behind half-spoken titles and forgotten epithets.

It is said that the stars remember. Iken remembers too.
