History
Haesta. A name spoken with iron on the tongue, for it was iron that first bound that star to the fate of Mann. The Galan of the Twelfth Fleet, ragged exiles when they drifted into the Drucos Nebula, were the first to anchor their banners there. They found little comfort, but they found ore, and from ore came the promise of survival. In time, the Feyan Star Dominion descended, as they ever did, with their laws and their tithe, and from Haesta’s dark belly they drew riches to feed their Dominion’s forges. When the Feyans withdrew, their harvesters gone, the people of Haesta were left a husk, weak, undermanned, and ripe for the talons of raiders.
So it was in the year 27,113 AA that Haesta’s fate was bartered, for King Hemfrey the Lightning King was granted that star among others by Guinevere the Supreme Lord herself, as ransom for her freedom. Thus did Haesta pass, not by conquest of fleets, but by the quill and seal of desperate bargain.
The centuries that followed were written in blood. When more Glessum Furse pressed into the Nebula, Haesta was among the first to fall. From its bones rose the Star Kingdom of Regnen, with Haesta as one of its crown jewels. And in 27,153 AA, Ella the Overlord strode upon its soil. With Wigburg the Bold, Alfgyth, Halbert, and their gathered lords, she crushed the Feyan-Galan remnants in the Battle of Haesta. The world was claimed, and the Overlord crowned a year later as King of Regnen. Haesta, once ore-fed servant of the Dominion, was now royal holding.
It was not long before steel clashed again. The Dragon of House Saeth Wraithborn crossed swords with Ella, and in the Battle of Drifwudu, neither side claimed mastery. Instead, a truce was sealed, aye, and friendship, though such friendships among kings are oft as fleeting as snow upon the river. From Haesta’s forges and fields, Ella drew strength, and she sent heralds beyond the void to call adventurers and mercenaries to her banner.
In 27,176 AA, another mark was made upon Haesta’s moons. King Alfhild the Quick Lightning of Gaint raised the Greathold of Sceotewde upon Lodden, setting stone and steel upon rock so that his house might claim both presence and prestige in Haesta’s sphere. That Greathold would endure centuries, passing through the hands of kings and, by 30,066 AA, granted anew to favored lords by King Astrid the Wide Ruler.
Yet Haesta was not only the prize of kings, but of the Faith. In 27,578 AA, King Cwenthryth of Gaint granted the Great Feyan Temple of Rakul’s Justice and Victory a shirehold upon the asteroid of Heolbec. From there, Pontiffs wielded as much weight as swords, their authority echoing through Haesta’s shires.
So the tale wound on. Wihtburg the King of Haesta took the crown under Cynehild Umbra Wyvernborn, known as Cynehild the Pious, though some styled him more lord than king, a ruler of Regnen’s shadow throne. His death in 27,650 AA was another stone cast into the ever-flowing tide, and Toland the Fortified followed. I myself recall hearing whispers of the Moot of Bregunt in 27,610 AA, where Toland and Wihtburg gathered with Cynehild beneath banners bright, their voices raised not in war, but in the endless wrangling of lords. Even then, the unity of Regnen was a fragile thing.
The storm broke in 27,742 AA. Deorswith the Scholar rebelled against Uhtred the Great of Angul. A woman of ink and words, she was drawn into war by her bloodline’s urging. At Haesta itself, the fleets of Uhtred crushed her and her kin, Sigegyth the Stone Mustang, Leofwine the Stone Sapphire, Ingemar the Stone Walker, and Wulfsige the Loyal. Their defeat sealed the fate of Regnen. Deorswith fell, and Uhtred the Great claimed Haesta, adding its crown to his own. By 27,780 AA, Uhtred was High King in truth, granting holdsteads across Regnen, Cerota, and Haesta, and the rest of Drala as if scattering coin to bind loyalty.
Centuries rolled on, yet Haesta’s iron did not rust. When Osgar the Great ruled the Dralan Star Kingdoms in the 30th millennium, his hand parceled out Haesta’s wealth to his kin. His bastard Leobert was granted Goldentooth, one of seven greatholds, while his niece Eadwynn the Wyvern Crown received Shadowfen upon Steyn, that grim world once chosen as the tomb of King Hildred the Noble Wyvern. I recall that matter well, for Osgar saw fit to remove Hildred’s bones to Belgar, lest Eadwynn gather prestige from guarding her grandmother’s resting place. A cruel stroke, though cunning, as ever was Osgar’s way.
And Haesta did not rest. In 30,184 AA, the Skane descended, vast hosts, thirteen thousand star-fleets under a warlord remembered only as Bloodhair, with a lesser host of four thousand led by Attor Lowca Witchborn. Bloodhair claimed Haesta, carving bases into its soil, launching raids upon Gewiss. But Osgar the Great stood watch, his daughter Wulfrun the Elder and his daughter-in-law Wulfrun of Angul at his side. Attor parleyed, while Bloodhair sought to break out. Battle raged across the Gaint Sector, until the Skane survivors fled to the Ark of Dermerk, besieged until they swore oaths and gave hostages. Only then were they permitted to flee, their claws broken, for a time.
By 30,256 AA, Haesta stood proud enough to host the Royal Mint and Hoard, raised by King Osmund the Glorious. From its vaults, coin flowed to all the whole Dralan realm. Lords of Haesta bore names long tied to its soil, Wihtgar, Septim, Sigegyth, each ruling as System-lords across generations, though raiders from Skold, Dungar, and more never ceased to test their strength. I remember one such raid in 30,396 AA, when Harwyn Forkbeard of Skold brought a fleet with rebelling Dungars at his side, and Haesta’s skies burned red.
Even in my long years, Haesta’s tale has remained ever entwined with strife, crowns, and the grasp of faith. Its moons and worlds, Lodden and Steyn chief among them, have seen kings crowned, temples raised, bones buried and disturbed, and hosts both Furse and Skane vying for dominion. Haesta is not a world that knows peace for long — but then, no jewel of the Nebula ever has.
