History
The Elge Star System, though lightly settled by the Galan people of the 12th Fleet of Mann and later by the Feyans following their conquest of Drala, held little prominence in the early epochs of the Catuvella Star Sector. That began to change long after the Feyan Withdrawal and the conversion of the Dralan Furse to the Feyan Faith. It was then that the famed Feyan Hero, Royal Consort Audrey Umbra Loreborn, daughter of King Frea the Revered of the Star Kingdom of Iken, left her mark.
Audrey wed King Ealread Frei Summerborn of the Elge Star System in 27,502 AA. Though styled a king, Ealread was little more than a system-lord presiding over a minor and largely inconsequential star kingdom. Nevertheless, Audrey’s union would bring with it great change. In 27,511 AA, King Ealread joined his liege-lord, King Cynethryth the Brave of Iken, along with King Cwenhild the Warlord of the Old Ways of Angul, and King Osbert the Hermit of Brigh, in a campaign against King Halnath the Victorious of the Star Kingdoms of Vota and Brigh. With 3,300 star-fleets amassed, their hopes were high.
Yet before the allied crusade could depart the Brigh Star Sector, King Halnath struck first, attacking the gathered forces at Parig over the world of Isara. This Battle of Isara would cement his epithet. Of the allies, only King Osbert survived, though some claim he fled before battle. Others say he was cut down by his uncle Halnath in the course of the battle. Ealread, Cynethryth, and Cwenhild were all slain. Halnath lost 750 star-fleets, his enemies 1,425, many to some unexplained force. Sorcery, solar flares, divine wrath, or some other force, we will never know.
After her husband’s death, Audrey was endowed with extensive lands, holdsteads, and wealth. With these, she commissioned the construction of the Great Feyan Temple of Bountiful Fields on the world of Elge in 27,546 AA, dedicating it to the Divine Yah Hamaliel. She became its first Temple Pontiff, her influence drawing settlers, pilgrims, and the faithful. Though she died just twelve years later in 27,558 AA, her legacy endured.
Audrey’s sister, Eadhild Umbra Loreborn, succeeded her as Temple Pontiff. In 27,590 AA, System Pontiff Leofgyth the Bold presided over the exhumation of Audrey’s body. To all present, it was untouched by time, preserved in holy perfection. She was canonized as a Feyan Hero, and Eadhild had her entombed within the temple.
The temple’s prestige only grew. In 27,619 AA, King Valgaut the Monk of the Star Kingdom of Catuvella granted holdsteads to the System Pontiff of Lohna and the Sector Pontiff of Catuvella upon the orbital shipyards of Beorheth in the Elge System. By 28,418 AA, the Feyan Faith was granted further lands and titles on Elge, allowing for the formal creation of the Pontiff of Elge.
Yet this golden age was not to last. In 30,140 AA, the Great Temple of Bountiful Fields was razed by the Skane Reavers of the Great Savage Crusade. The desecration was immense. But as with all sacred places of old, it rose again. In 30,338 AA, Sector Pontiff Dudda Heortha Knightcrown of the Belgar Star System and the Durot Star Sector re-founded the temple. By 30,340 AA, the shrine was rebuilt, grander than before.
In 30,348 AA, controversy erupted. The Temple Pontiff of Bountiful Fields, alongside a cadre of monks and armed zealots, embarked on a journey to the Broken World of Scorcdust in the Tweon Star System. There, they orchestrated a feast as a ruse, waited until their hosts were well into drink, and then stole the remains of Leofhilde Umbra Loreborn, sister to Audrey and Eadhild, and founder of the Great Temple of the Eternal Fields. With her relics in tow, they fled under cover of night back to Elge. The enraged people of Scorcdust gave pursuit but failed to intercept the tomb-robbers.
Leofhilde was entombed beside her sisters in the Great Temple of Bountiful Fields. Upon returning to Scorcdust, it is said that a sacred spring arose where her tomb once lay, perhaps a divine sign or a curse upon those who defiled her rest.
In the centuries to follow, the Elge System remained a stronghold of the Feyan Faith, its temple one of the wealthiest and most revered in the Star Commonwealth of Drala. From tragedy and theft to sanctity and miracles, the story of Elge is woven with threads both holy and profane, a tale most fitting for the annals of the faithful and the curious alike.
