History
The Bregas Star System
As Recorded by Witch Lord Bertwin Gisking Bearspear, Keeper of the Old Memory
Bregas was long a name spoken only by those who lived beneath its suns, a minor backwater on the far edges of concern, neither rich in trade nor glorious in war. For thousands of years it slumbered, its scattered Galan and Feyan holdings little more than footholds against the silence of the void. I have walked among those ruins, weathered spires of Galan stone, Feyan courtyards still etched with fading murals of long-dead emperors. They are relics, not monuments, reminders of the days when Bregas was an afterthought to greater powers.
It was not until the arrival of the Great Savage Crusade that the system awoke. In the storm’s aftermath came the Skanes, hard-eyed settlers, most from the Cyth star cluster and the newly founded Star Kingdom of Cyth. Where Galan and Feyan had left scattered holdings, the Skanes raised their own, binding the system not by tribute but by presence. In a few generations, Bregas was no longer a forgotten waypoint but a stronghold of the Skanelaw, its harbors brimming with Skane banners.
Its quiet days ended in 30,157 AA, when it was named in the Peace of Osgar & Oughtred. Along with Lohna, Camul, Caemb, Pecsa, Maeres, Stayn, and Wreoca, Bregas was declared a neutral star system, its fate bound to the uneasy division between the Dralan Skanelaw realms and Gewiss. Yet “neutral” was a word of the treaty, not the truth, for many of these systems, Bregas among them, were already deep in the grasp of Skane rulers placed there in the Crusade’s wake.
For all its strategic rise, Bregas is known for a peculiarity far less grand than its history, the worst field rations in the Star Commonwealth of Drala. I have tasted them, and would not wish the experience upon friend or foe. Bland as cold ash, they have neither the bite of Skane fare nor the savor of Galan hearth-cooking. In the mess halls, soldiers mutter that to survive on Bregas rations is to prove one’s worth to the gods, and I have yet to hear a man call it a lie.
So it is with Bregas, once a shadow in the maps, now a keystone of the Skanelaw, fortified not just by starships and warriors, but by the stubborn will of those who made it their own. I suspect it will never again be forgotten, though I dearly wish its cooks had been.
