Of Brigh and the Stormborn Legacy
As recorded by Witch Lord Bertwin Gisking Bearspear, chronicler of ruins and kingdoms
The Brigh Star Sector, ancient and oft-contested, was once a pillar of the Feyan Dominion’s power in the Drucos Nebula, its jewel being Hebura, a world of vast temples, sacred archives, and bloodied coronations.
It was here, on Hebura’s sacred ground, that General Lucius ‘The Great’ Galata Visionborn was crowned Emperor of the True Feyan Star Dominion, a bold claim that shattered the fractured remnants of the old order and, for a time, reunited the splintered Feyan factions. In that brief epoch, Hebura was the center of the universe for the faithful. But as ever, empires fade, and dominions crumble.
With the Feyan Withdrawal, the Brigh Sector fell, like so many others, into decline. Its star systems splintered into bickering realms ruled by warlords and petty kings. The Feyan-Galan survivors hired mercenaries from the distant Glessum Cluster, Furse warriors who had fled the Wergh’s conquest and the burning of their ancestral homes.
Among these refugees came Steorra Umbra Stormborn, known as Steorra the Stormbearer, who took the Votadin Star System and the great Starhold of Gwa, carving out her dominion among foreign star. In time, her son Ecgtheow the Storm Hammer conquered large portions of the Star Kingdom of Brigh, though Hebura, proud and unyielding, remained outside his grasp.
That changed with the Battle of Bretwalda, when King Beadohild the Storm Shadow descended upon the Hebura Star System from the Vota Star Kingdom to aide her kin, King Cuthfleda Umbra Stormborn, and claimed what their forebears could not. Hebura fell, and with it, the old order. The Stormborn line now ruled not only Vota, but also Brigh, uniting two kingdoms beneath two storm-wreathed crowns of shared blood.
The union, however, did not bring peace.
King Oughtred the Twister of Vota warred against his kin, defeating King Cuthfleda in the Battle of Catraeth, and binding both realms into what many whispered was a rebirth of the Star Kingdom of Umber, named for the lost kingdom of from the Glessum star cluster, the region of space from which many of their ancestors had fled.
It was Wulfgar the Great, born of vengeance and blood, who slew Oughtred and crowned himself King of this new Umber. His reign marked the peak of Stormborn power, and in time, Wulfgar the Great would be named Fifth High King of Drala, the first to embrace the Feyan Faith, and the root from which that faith would spread among the other Dralan Star Kingdoms.
For a time, Umber was preeminent, its culture, wealth, and religious authority unmatched. But the wheel turned, as it always does, and the crown passed to Angul, leaving Umber a fading titan. Even so, it remained one of the four great Dralan Kingdoms, until the storm came once more.
The Great Savage Crusade, born of rage and retribution, descended upon Drala with fire and fury.
King Rothgar the Fearless, raiding far from the Skane nebula, received word that the lords of the nebula sought to crown him High King and restore Skane Star Empire which had broken apart under his father and in time, the ancient Furse Star Empire. But fate, cruel, laughing fate, intervened. His ship failed. He was found adrift in Drucos nebula by King Cuthfleda Umbra Stormcaldon of Umber, known as Cuthfleda the Unlucky. Rothgar was captured, and killed.
When the Children of Rothgar heard of his death, their vengeance shook the stars. They unleashed the Great Savage Crusade, not to reclaim crowns or borders, but to drown Drala in the blood of kings. Umber fell first. Its fleets shattered. King Cuthfleda the Unlucky died a death best left undescribed.
The Skanes took Umber, and many of their warlords remained. In the Vota star sector, House Stormborn held on, ruling from the Starhold of Gwa, stubborn and proud. The Star Kingdom of Umber however rose again, this time under new Skane kings like Rowana the Half-Raven, Grimhilt the Lord and many others who ruled with puppet kings of House Stormborn and the Storm Clan. Theirs was the last kingdom to fall to the Star Kingdom of Gewiss, and only with that final conquest could King Osmund the Glorious found the Star Commonwealth of Drala.
Even now, the Brigh Star Sector bears deep Skane roots. While Vota managed to hold back many invaders, Brigh fell deeper into their grip. Skane bloodlines dominate its lordships. The past is not past, it lives, hidden beneath heraldry and bound oaths.
The sector is anchored by four mighty star systems:
Hebura, still holy, still contested,
Linna, gateway to the Old Great Way,
Gegn, center of growing power,
Parig, once a border, now a bridge.
Sector-lord Fromund Umbra Stormbrand, known as Fromund the Bold, ruled Brigh in recent memory. His daughter Brunhild wed King Oswald the Ill-Advised, a union meant to bind old loyalties. But when Fromund fell in battle against Skane raiders, his son, Thored Umbra Stormbrand, was accused of treason, betrayed, perhaps unjustly, though I make no judgments here, only because I lack the proof. Stripped of his titles, he was left only the title of Highlord of Niwfreoge and the ancestral seat of his noble house, the Greathold Stormbrand Crag on Hebura.
In his place rose Eddard Weylin Bloodborn, who now rules as Sector-lord of Brigh, lord of both Gegn and Hebura, and arguably the most powerful lord in the Star Commonwealth, rivaled only by his sister, Winfred ‘Spot’ Weylin Bloodborn, Sector-lord of Vellaun and hand of the King.
Thus, power shifts again.
The Stormborn name, once thunder upon the stars, now fades. The Weylin Bloodborns, pragmatic and potent, ascend. But blood remembers, and Brigh is not a realm that forgets its storms.
