History

On Dungar, the Last of Old Galan
By the hand of Witch Lord Bertwin Gisking Bearspear, Keeper of the Quiet Chronicles

The Dungar Star Sector lies in the shadow of ages, a remnant of Old Galan Space, that ancient span of stars once ruled by the Galan of the Twelfth Fleet of Mann. In those days, its worlds were kin to the elder Galan realms of the Gulla and Malaga Nebulae, and to the fringes of the Talus Nebula. They were among the first fruits of Galan colonization in the Drucos Nebula.

For millennia, the Feyan Star Dominion held sway here, and the Galan peoples of Dungar embraced the Feyan Faith with fervor. The old temples still rise from mountain slopes and valley floors, though many now stand cracked and fire-scorched, their bells silenced by centuries of war.

When the Feyan withdrew from Drala, the sector splintered into small star kingdoms, proud, fractious, and looking to the long memory of their Galan forebears. Of these, the Star Kingdom of Isca was the strongest, until the threat of the Glessum Furse forced unity, however fragile, among Dungar’s worlds.

The Glessum Furse came as they always do, some as raiders, others as refugees, all as conquerors. They carved through Drala, taking hold after hold, but Dungar stood apart. Even when severed from their Galan cousins by the expansion of the Star Kingdom of Gewiss, they endured, maintaining trade only through the Gwyr Star Sector in the Combrogi Cluster. There, other Galan peoples resisted the same fate.

Dungar’s history since has been written in fire. The Dralan Star Kingdoms invaded time and again. The Star Commonwealth of Drala itself has sent fleets to break them. Always the invaders were expelled, sometimes in days, sometimes in years. Yet in recent centuries the Dungars have bent the knee, if only in form, paying homage to Drala while holding fast to their own ways. They lack the strength to overthrow the Star Commonwealth, but they retain a talent for war, swift hit-and-run strikes, sudden reversals, and the uncanny ability to turn even a lost world into a trap for the unwary.

Dungar’s people have learned hard lessons. They do not gather their strength in singular capitals or great metropolises, for such things draw fleets like carrion draws crows. Even the Isca, Carnbrathan, Mawgansan, Nansarnek, and Kynancear Star Systems are scattered into small holdsteads, mountain citadels, and forest keeps. This dispersal lets them vanish into the hills, tunnels and highlands when danger comes, and strike back when the moment turns.

Their sector is riddled with asteroid fields, dense and treacherous, rich in minerals that confound sensors. Here, a pilot survives not by the reading of a console, but by the sense in his gut. These fields have ever been Dungar’s ally, ragged fleets have used them to bleed the ships of greater powers, ambushing supply lines and vanishing without trace.

And within these asteroids lies Starmetal, a rare and precious ore found in only a handful of places across the Settled Worlds of Mann, and nowhere else in the Drucos Nebula. Its value draws miners, smugglers, and worse. Many fields have become dens of pirates and outlaws, their ships tucked away in rock-shadow, waiting for prey.

In this age, Sector-lord Sigfast Ulrik Geat Moonborn holds Dungar’s reins. Once a Skane warlord, he bent the knee to the Star Commonwealth and to King Oswald the Ill-Advised. The local Galan see him not as master, but with great respect for who he is and as an ally to System-lord Arthfael Cadoc Bogborn of Kynancear, the man many call the rightful King of Dungar. Arthfael’s rebellion to free the sector failed, yet his name is still spoken with respect. In the end, Sigfast saved him from death at the hands of Warlord Kunibert Sturm Platinumborn. Arthfael yielded his crown, bent the knee, and now rules under Sigfast’s protection.

For now, the sector endures under this uneasy peace. But Dungar is a realm of long memory. It remembers the Old Galan kings, the Feyan emperors, the Skane warlords, and the many crowns of Drala that tried to hold it.

It also remembers that none ever held it for long.
