History: Uhtred’s Boundary

There are stretches of the void where the very stars seem to bristle with watchtowers, and among the greatest of these, in scope if not in strength, was Uhtred’s Boundary.

The line was conceived by King Uhtred the Great of Angul, a ruler who understood that the measure of a star nation is not only in its conquests but in the walls it raises against its foes. Stretching for more than 1,800 light years along the frontier with Combrogi space, it was intended as a shield against the raids of the Feyan-Galan beyond. The boundary ran from the Bodunn Star System to Wreoca, cutting past Kerweg and Medubrix, and touching dozens of lightly settled minor star system whose people knew too well the sound of warning bells.

Yet it was not born whole. Its roots lay decades earlier, when King Grimhilda the Warrior repaired and expanded an older chain of fortifications along that same frontier. Uhtred, upon taking the crown, made it his own vision, a continuous border of watch, ward, and response. Over years, perhaps decades, hundreds of outposts were raised, lonely stations in the deep, most unmanned save for the passage of patrols.

The heart of Uhtred’s Boundary was the seventeen Starholds, each charged to guard a span of roughly 150 light years. Between them lay 33 starbases, spaced every seventy-five light years, 67 starports every thirty-seven light years, outposts every eighteen light years, weapon platforms every nine light years and sensor relays every five. The scale dwarfed any other defensive line save for the famed Bardas’s Shield, though in sheer fortification Bardas’s works far outmatched Uhtred’s. Still, for a time, the Boundary stood as a living frontier, its beacons flaring in warning, its patrols harrying intruders.

It was during these works that the Star Kingdom of Angul expanded yet again, with Uhtred subduing the Star Kingdom of Magon and binding its ruler, King Magon Ghostborn, to his service as Lord Warden of the Boundary itself. He likewise set Lord Jordayne Smokeborn of Hywych to guard the Gewiss Star March, and appointed a third Lord Warden over the Dungar Star March.

Uhtred himself campaigned often along the line, clashing with Combrogi raiders and walking the very fortification and decks he had ordered into being. I have read his own dispatches, terse, practical, and always with an eye for the gaps that needed mending.

For all its reach, the Boundary was never unassailable. Starships could avoid it, but it offered the defenders of Angul a place to launch patrols from. When the Great Savage Crusade fell upon Angul, its outposts fell silent one by one. By the year 30,148 AA, the last defenders had abandoned their posts, many fortresses had already been stripped or deserted. House Jordayne Smokeborn, long a bulwark in Hywych, fled their ancestral world on Weorgoran, taking their banners and household to the Setan Star Sector, though some branches of the tribe stubbornly remained.

Years later, King Osgar the Great, together with Wulfrun the Lord of Angul and Bjorn the Lord of Angul, attempted to breathe life into the Boundary again. But after twenty-six years without a garrison, their efforts faltered. A few outposts endured, weathered and stubborn as the men who held them, but the grand chain was broken.

Today, Uhtred’s Boundary is a graveyard of stone and steel, its stations picked over by salvagers and its corridors haunted by the echo of old alarms. I have walked among those cold, stripped shells, Outpost Wulfstar, a hundred million kilometers from its FTL point, its walls scarred by weapons long silent, the jagged remains of Reaper’s Nest, its beacon tower collapsed into the dust of an airless moon. They are relics of an age when kings believed they could wall the stars themselves, and of the truth that the stars bow to no wall for long.

Calls for it to be garrisoned and rebuilt are heard often, but the Star Commonwealth of Drala has refrained from such action, and raids from the Combrogi have become less common, though not unheard of.
